Getting Around Melbourne

Getting around Melbourne is fairly easy on public transport. The city and surrounding areas are well connected by trams and buses. Melbourne's tram system is a standout in this beautiful city and a connection to years long gone. You may also want to take a cruise along The Yarra River and experience Melbourne at its best.  There are many river cruises to choose from, including ferries and water taxis.

There is so much to see and do in Melbourne it will always keep you coming back for more. If it's a sports game, theatre, shopping or band you want to see you will be spoilt for choice. There are many activities to keep you interested and the multicultural flavour of the city is evident in the architecture, museums and cuisine.

Sport in Melbourne is serious business. Cricket and Australian Rules football are, by far, the most popular sports. But the city is also home to Rugby codes, a thriving horse racing culture, the Australian Open Tennis Championships and Formula One grand prix.

Visit one of Melbourne's many Museums. There's an incredible collection of museums within Melbourne including NVG International, The Ian Potter Centre: NVG Australia, the Australian centre for Moving Image and Australian Centre of Contemporary Art.  The Melbourne Museum is  the largest  in the Southern Hemisphere. It's located in Melbourne's Carlton Gardens near the Royal Exhibition Building, giving visitors many options for an enjoyable afternoon.

Go to the Theatre. Melbourne presents some spectacular stage musicals, as well as contemporary dance, ballet and opera. The city has six historic theatres as well as the magnificent Arts Centre. Also worth a look is the suburb of St Kilda and its arts culture.

The Queen Victoria Markets is well worth a visit where everything from basic fruit and vegetables to gourmet produce, fashion and other merchandise are on offer.

Melbourne's Chinatown features a Chinese Museum with exhibitions explaining the Chinese culture and history in Australia, going right back to the gold rush.

Melbourne Zoo has more than 300 different species on display. Combined with the Melbourne Aquarium there's something for every wildlife connoisseur and will surely keep the kids entertained.

Another highlight is the Crown Casino at Southbank which is the largest casino in Australia, on the southern side of the Yarra River Melbourne.  It houses many fine restaurants and shops and has stunning chandeliers and a water fall inside.

Melbourne has the second largest tram fleet in the world and there's even a restaurant tram you can enjoy a meal on. If you stick to the tram route you really can't go wrong, there is also a great rail and bus service throughout Melbourne. If you're concerned about getting lost, try staying in the vicinity of Crown Casino, it has all you need in dining and entertainment.

Melbourne Events and Festivals

The Melbourne Cup horse race is held every November and Australia stops to watch. It's not just about that one race, though, the spring racing carnival lasts for 50 days in Melbourne. It's as much about the fashion as the horses and definitely a memory you'll cherish.

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival is on in February and March and each year attracts food and wine experts from all around the world. World renowned chefs, winemakers, growers and lovers of great food and wine all make the journey to Melbourne for a culinary feast.

If you do miss the Food and Wine Festival don't despair. Melbourne's incredible multicultural diversity has created the most amazing melting pot of restaurants, bistros, cafes and bars in Australia.

The Melbourne Comedy Festival happens every year across March and April at Melbourne Town Hall. The comedy festival has become a favourite amongst locals and visitors and just gets bigger and better each year.

See the Rip Curl Pro Surfing Competition at Bells Beach.  Surfing isn't always the first thing people think of when talking about Melbourne, but the Bells Beach event is Australia's most prestigious and longest running surfing event.

Places to Eat
Melbourne is the food capital of Australia and is home to many fine restaurants and cafes. Just take a walk and pick the place that appeals, Melbourne's standards are so high it's hard to make a mistake. The coffee is to die for. If Italian is your thing head to Lygon Street where the waiters will try and entice you with a free bottle of wine or dessert for choosing their restaurant.

The Seagrass Restaurant is located in the heart of Melbourne, right on the Yarra River. The Seagrass menu has selections from both land and sea and a main will cost between $30 and $40 approximately.

Finz in Sandringham has a cafe on the bottom floor and fine dining on the top floor. It's a great place to eat or just relax with a coffee and some cake, main meals are priced around the $30 region with speciality dishes like the BBQ platter priced at $75 per person for an incredible meal of seafood.

If you enjoy something sweet head to Ackland Street in St Kilda, there are many cafes and bakeries with sweet temptations in the windows.

For chocolate lovers there are many fine chocolatiers including Haigh's and Coco Black. Or for a special treat Max Brennar has amazing melted pots of chocolate accompanied by waffles, fondue and drinks to send you on a sugar high.

When to Visit Melbourne
Much has been said about the Melbourne weather, like 'If you don't like the weather stick around ten minutes and it should change!'You should really plan for all weather conditions when visiting.

Melbourne is cold during the Australian winter months of June to August, and not prone to regular snowfalls. The lowest winter temperature has been 4 degrees C and Melbourne experiences fog and frost during winter.
Melbourne can be quite hot during summer and peak temperatures in the 40 Degree C range occur during the Australian summer months of December to February.  Rain and high winds can be common and sudden across all seasons.

Air: Melbourne has two main airports, the primary airport is the Melbourne International & Domestic Airport located at Tullamarine and is well serviced by a wide variety of carriers. Flights to Melbourne are well catered for by most airlines. The secondary airport, Melbourne Avalon is much further out of the city nearer to Geelong and is used by low cost airlines including Jetstar.
Rail: There are also train services from Sydney through country link which will take around 11 hours and costs approximately $130 for an economy seat.
Road: Coach services from Greyhound and easy road access though distances will be long if travelling from inter-state.
