Melbourne's suburbs
extend along its famous Yarra River and each suburb has heavy ethnic
influences from the flow of new arrivals after World War II. Melbourne
has the second highest population of Greeks, second only to the capital
in Athens. Within the suburb of Carlton and Brunswick the Italian
influence is strong, while in Preston there is a definite Macedonian
flavour. Oakleigh and Northcote are favourite Greek areas and Richmond
and Springvale have a heavy Vietnamese influence. Many other suburbs
have strong Maltese, Serbian, Turkish, Lebanese, Spanish and North
African accents that are obvious in their cuisine and culture.
