The Mawson family home in King Street, Brighton was designed by Mawson while he was in Antarctica in 1913. Sir Douglas Mawson was featured on the front of the $100 note prior to our current $100 note. Mawson`s scientific contributions ranged over a wide area of geology and physics and included three expeditions to the Antartic.

Mawson died at his Brighton home on 14 October 1958 following a cerebral hemorrhage. He was accorded a Commonwealth state funeral and was buried at St Jude`s Anglican Church, Brighton.
