Towards evening on 18 August 1836, a small 160 tonne brig, the Rapid, her sails stained from much voyaging, anchored three miles out from a creek estuary among the sand dunes of the eastern shore of Gulf St.Vincent. In tribute to the shelter given by the bay, her Commander named it Holdfast Bay. The City of Holdfast Bay was formed out of an amalgamation of the City Councils of Brighton and Glenelg in 1997.
