Getting around the Whitsundays
 
Getting around the Whitsunday Islands has never been easier.  There are car rentals, taxis and limousines to get you where you need to go.  The Whitsunday Transit also offers buses up and down the coast.  To get back and forth from the various islands you can hop aboard a Fantasea Cruise which operates daily.  Cruise Whitsundays also operates daily to get you back and forth to Airlie Beach.

What to do in the Whitsundays

One of the main attractions in Whitsunday Islands is the Great Barrier Reef.  Considered to be the worlds largest living structure at over 2000 kilometres in length, the Great Barrier Reef is worth coming to Whitsundays for.  You can snorkel or scuba dive among the tens of thousands of brilliantly coloured fish, coral, and other marine life.  If getting wet isn't your thing you can visit the reef from a glass bottom boat or an underwater viewing chamber.  You can even stay on a hotel room right on the reef itself.  

Since the Coral Sea is so beautiful and calm, there is plenty of sailing to do, whether you take a charter boat, or rent a sailboat of your own.  There are many catamarans, day cruises, and other ways to get around Whitsundays or the other Whitsunday islands.  

Don't forget about the amazing fishing in and around Hamilton Island which offers tuna, mackerel, coral trout and of course the legendary Black Marlin.  After you have gotten your fill of the water if you feel like doing a little hiking, you can head on 'The Great Walk' which is 30km long and takes you through Conway State Forest.  With 74 Whitsunday Islands to choose from, you can shop, golf, eat, or just be lazy on the beach.

One of the biggest events in Whitsundays is the Whitsunday Reef Festival.  It is a 10 day celebration that will be hosted over 12 different venues.  Featuring live entertainment, fabulous cuisine, wine, and activities, this is a festival that includes the entire family that is truly an event to go to.  Then of course you have Cracker Night which is an annual event that helps out local charities.  Held on Arlie Beach, it includes fireworks, live bands, and activities for the children. 

If fishing is your sport of choice then you can't miss the Whitsunday Game Fish Tournament.  It is both a team and individual event with many prizes and trophies given out to the winners.  This tournament is becoming more popular every year with people coming from all over to join in this exciting event.

Airlie Beach offers the most for your dining pleasure.  When you walk along the boardwalk you can find many restaurants that range from fast food to five start cuisine experiences.  Known for its fresh seafood and local produce, you can dine like the locals do.  The Esplanade on Airlie Beach is where you will find the most choices for places to eat.  Whether it is fish and chips on the beach or world renowned cuisine you can find almost anything you are looking for, but a lot less crowded. 

Entertainment in Whitsundays, Australia

From live music at the Boehme's Nightclub and Bar, to the Yacht Club Tavern, the choices are plentiful about where you can get some great Whitsundays entertainment.  There are plenty of beach side bars in Airlie Beach, and some upscale taverns in Hamilton Island.  There are also dive-in movies, outdoor movies, and visiting comedians to bring some pleasure to your evenings in Whitsundays.

With a tropical climate of hot summers, warm winters, and wonderful spring and fall days, this really is the perfect weather for outdoor activities.  In winter, you can expect the temperature to be on average around 23 degrees Celsius, and in the height of summer, the temperature rises to about 31 degrees Celsius.  January through March is usually the wetter months with afternoon tropical showers breaking up the steamy summer heat.  The water though is about 25 degrees Celsius all year round making it a great time to head to Whitsundays any time of the year!

How to Get to Whitsundays

Located in Central Queensland, Whitsundays is accessible through two airports.  The Great Barrier Reef Airport in Hamilton Island has fewer direct flights but is easy to get into from a major airport.  Whitsunday Coast Airport located in Prosperine is the major airport that people fly into.  Both do have direct flights via Jetstar and Virgin Blue from places such as Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.  From Cairns there is a direct flight via Quantas.  Flying into Hamilton Island there are shuttles that will take you directly to your accommodations or you can take a ferry to the various islands.  In Prosperine, you can take a taxi or shuttle service to your hotel.
