 What to Do in Port Douglas

Instead of asking what you can do in Port Douglas, you should be asking yourself what you can’t do which is almost nothing.  You can start by taking a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef or a cruise along the beautiful Daintree River.  From there you can snorkel through the waters around the Great Barrier Reef, or even take a dive to explore the best of the Great Barrier Reef.  With expert dive masters, anyone who is Scuba certified can enjoy all the amazing coral gardens and brightly coloured fish.  

Four mile beach is superb to just hang out on with the family and soak in the sun if scuba diving isn’t for you, or you could learn to jet ski, parasail, or just swim the day away.  After a day of fun you can head to the Port Douglas Tropical Fruits Winery to enjoy a relaxed wine tasting tour.  Wines fortified with mango, star fruit, grapefruit and water cherry are sure to hit the spot.  

A day at the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary will be unique as well as information.  You can appreciate the wildlife up close as you watch for 180 different species of the rainforest, wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands.  If you want to get some outdoor excitement on your own, you can go on various hikes through the Bloomfield Falls, up to Flagstaff Hill, or anywhere in between as there are miles of trails in Port Douglas.  

Don’t forget about the Daintree National Park which is the oldest living rainforest on earth.  At almost 140 millions old, there are plenty of places to hike, canoe, and swim. 


Events in Port Douglas

One of the largest annual events in Port Douglas takes place each May.  The Port Douglas Village Carnivale showcases the life and culture of the tropics with special exhibitions, music, and celebration.  There is even a circus and many events that with thrill everyone.  Also in late may in the Seafood Festival which is held during the last days of the Carnival.  In December another event that locals and visitors alike look forward to are the Christmas Markets.  Held on every Sunday in December these Main Street market fairs allow you to meet up with locals, purchase unique gifts from the town and stock up on your locally grown produce.

From beach side restaurants that turn into Karaoke bars in the evening to the three hot spots that have quickly become known as “the” place to go, there is plenty of nightlife and entertainment to be had in Port Douglas.  Many of the tourists head to The Court House, The Iron Bar, and Nicky G’s in the evening.  From one to another they make their way around the three for some of the best nightlife in Port Douglas.  If you are looking for something a little more low key, you can certainly hang out in a myriad of local bars, cafes, and pubs along Four Mile Beach.  As far as entertainment there are loads of choices for this relaxed little town.

The weather in Port Douglas is superb all year round.  With a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in the summer and 26 degrees Celsius in the winter, you rarely have a bad day in Port Douglas.  During the winter you may have some cooler evenings, but during the summertime it is balmy which usually means rain in the afternoons.  Again, Port Douglas is called Tropical North Queensland for a reason, because there are usually only two seasons – the “green” season and the “dry” season.  Around November the rains start to come and end around May.  During this time, Port Douglas gets up to 90% of their rain.

 How to Get to Port Douglas

Port Douglas is located just 70 kilometres from Cairns which is the location of the nearest airport – the Cairns International and Domestic Airports.  Cairns International airport is the largest regional airport and is considered the gateway for Port Douglas, and the Great Barrier Reef.  From the airport you can take any of the airport to hotel shuttles or a taxi. You can travel by water in the many water taxis and ferries.  With just one hour between you and paradise, getting to Port Douglas is just another adventure in this wonderful journey.
