Wollongong  is located on the east coast of Australia, just 80 kilometres from Sydney. It's part of the Illawarra region and known affectionately as "the Gong".  What to Do

The Illawarra Museum is located in Market Square and provides highly informative insight into Wollongong's history. You'll visit rooms filled with artefacts from the past like the turn of the century classroom, stockman's hut and blacksmith's shop. All the rooms have been authentically recreated.

The Illawarra Motoring Museum is a good stop off for lovers of antique automobiles. The collection of cars, motorcycles and other automotive memorabilia is impressive. The museum also has early typewriters, telephones and office equipment that might make you appreciate your email and fax machine a little more.

You can visit one of Wollongong's great beaches. The coastline has 17 beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September through to April. All the beaches are within walking distance from local shops, hotels and clubs.

Visit the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music for a great afternoon of music and scenery. The conservatorium is located in one of the regions most beautiful buildings, Glennifer Brae Manor House. Built in the 1930's, the house has gothic style windows and winding chimneys, providing an inspirational setting for musicians and composers. Many outdoor recitals are presented in the manor grounds near the botanic garden.

Take a bike ride. Wollongong has excellent cycleways around its famous coastline. The cycleway makes its way through some spectacular beach scenery. It's a great way to get around the city and keep fit at the same time.

What's On

The Mt Kembla Mining Heritage Festival is on each year around July and August. Events & displays are spread over Mt Kembla, Kembla Heights and Mt Kembla Oval.

Spring into Corrimal is held in September and is a day where the community comes together to enjoy the Australian lifestyle in Wollongong. Entertainment is supplied by various ethnic and indigenous groups and the festival involves many charitable and community organisations. Stalls include crafts and food plus lots more.
