The Snowy Mountains provides a special charm with abundant wildflowers in the spring and produces grazing for cattle, sheep and horses.  Summertime brings outdoor enthusiasts to the highest mountain range in Australia to go backpacking, horseback riding, bird watching, wildlife enthusiasts and take summer tours to the Snowy Mountain ski resorts.

Perisher Blue is the largest skiing resort in the Snowy Mountains and one that is worth heading to right away.  Perisher Blue incorporates Perisher, Smidgins, Blue Crow Guthega Skiing and Cooma, Perisher Valley and Blue Crow as the local villages.  There are 50 different lifts can whisk you to the top of the hill for skiing for all levels of enthusiasts.

Getting around the Snowy Mountains

Getting around the Snowy Mountains is best done by car, but if you're squeamish about driving on snow and ice you can park your car at the terminal and catch the ski tube, an underground train to Snowy mountain ski resorts such as Perisher and Blue Crow resorts

The airport in the Snowy Mountains is just 15 kilometres away from most Snowy Mountain ski resorts which supports Cooma and the surrounding areas.  A bus service connects local areas and towns three times a day by either Cooma Coaches or the Country Link Busses which make daily journeys to Canberra and Bega Valley.  You may also choose the passenger trains to get to Snowy mountain ski resorts at Cooma, Perisher, Thredbo, or Jindabyne or hire a car or taxi service.

The Snowy Mountains weather varies with an average wintertime temperature of -5 degrees Celsius and summer times average of 18 degrees Celsius.  The weather in the Snowy Mountains is incredibly unpredictable.  In the winter the temperatures can fall suddenly in the Snowy Mountains, and it is not uncommon for snow to fall on the peaks of the Main Range mid-summer, so it is important that you get your daily forecast before you head out for the day in the Snowy Mountains.

How to Get to get to the Snowy Mountains

You can reach the Snowy Mountains from either Sydney or Melbourne via Kendall Air Lines when you fly into Cooma.  You can also take the bus with Greyhound Pioneer, which runs into Cooma or Jindabyne.

Of course, you can always drive up into the high country into the Snowy Mountains via your own personal car or a rental vehicle.  Be sure to carry tyre chains at all times, as mountainous weather can be unpredictable.  It's possible to rent or purchase chains for most service stations around Jindabyne and Cooma area Snowy Mountain ski resorts if you don't already have them.

Taking the train is a wonderful way to see the countryside on your way to the Snowy Mountains and in particular Jindabyne, Cooma, Blue Crow, Perisher Valley, Thredbo and other Snowy Mountain Ski Resorts. Shuttles to and from resorts are offered from the airport, bus depot and train station.
