Forster NSW (commonly misspelt Foster) is situated 3-4 hours drive north east of Sydney or about 1.5 - 2 hours north of Newcastle. With the magnificent eastern dividing range to one side and the most dazzling stretch of coast to the other, locals and visitors will enjoy telling you about the paradise they have discovered. Secluded bays, deserted beaches, stunning coastal scenery and incredible sub-tropical forests are combined in this oasis of tranquillity. With a population of just less-than 20,000 people, Foster and its twin city Tuncurry, have just enough people to experience all the modern needs and still feel like a private paradise.

What to Do in Forster

There's no shortage of activities for all ages at Forster and its surrounds. Amusement parks, cinemas, unique shopping, clubs, fine dining, golf courses, sailing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, diving, markets and special events await all visitors.
 
The area is often referred to as the Great Lakes area and is a water playground, totalling 145 kilometres of beautiful coastline and inland waterways based around Wallis, Smiths and Myall lakes. Fishing, site seeing, relaxing, swimming and diving are some of the visitors favourites.
With the ranges so close, it's also a great opportunity to explore the deep green forests, all throughout the area you'll find the most breathtaking scenery.


The most popular beaches are Forster Main beach and One Mile beach. Beach life is obsession in Australia and nowhere is this more true than in The Great Lakes. With 145km of the most stunning coastline, the Great Lakes boasts some of Australia's best beaches and it's very easy to find a deserted piece of coastline all for yourself. There are beach locations for surfing, 4WD, diving, fishing or just taking a walk.

If you're a fan of National Parks, The Great Lakes has some of the finest in Australia with deep green forests with crystal clear creeks extending out to golden beaches. Smiths Lake is ideal for families and offers swimming, sailing, catamaran rides and sail boarding to keep you active as you soak up the tranquillity.
 
Broughton Island is the largest island along the NSW coastline and is located at the border zone of both temperate and tropical waters. It seems an incredible paradox to visitors, but Broughton Island waters are home for both coral and penguins.

Go diving at Forster and you won't be disappointed. The Great Lakes offers snorkellers and divers some of the best options in Australia, with many deep dive sites that are world class. There's wall diving, underwater caves, archways, shipwrecks, pinnacles, tropical and temperate varieties of fish life, colonies of Grey Nurse sharks and more.

Take a cruise around some of the Great Lakes areas and soak up the stunning scenery. The list of charter and cruise options is massive, ensuring there's something for everyone. Dolphin and whale watching is the most popular but diving and ocean fishing charters as well as luxury charters are also very popular.

Visit a winery and enjoy the great tastes that go along with Australian vineyards. There are many fine wineries in the area and they all offer some fantastic opportunities to relax and spend some quality time in fine atmosphere.

Great Lakes Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Forster has lots of activities for all the family. It's an indoor fitness centre with three pools, spa, sauna, health studio and massage.

The Curtis Collection is a museum in Forster that showcases historical artifacts, vintage to rare modern cars, horse drawn vehicles, grammophones, farm tools, vintage cameras and lots more.

Visit Booti Booti National Park, located on 1,567 hectares 10 kilometres south of Forster. The National Park has forests by the ocean and great fishing opportunities. Facilities include: showers, toilets, campsites and picnic tables. Camping is available at The Ruins but no open fires are allowed in the park.

Tobwabba Art Gallery and Studio in Forster is 100% owned by an Aboriginal artists collective. Tobwabba Artists are recognised nationally and visitors are welcome to meet the artists and watch them at work.

What's On in Forster

On the last Saturday of every month the Nabiac Showground hosts the Nabiac Farmers Market. It's a real town market with organic vegetables, free range eggs, wine tasting, local fruit and produce, chocolates, gingerbread, honey and much more.

The Myall Quays Village Market is held on the third Saturday of each month at Tea Gardens. Stallholders sell crafts, plants, photography, jewellery and more.

Forster Restaurants - Places to Eat

Forster's Prime Rib & Steakhouse is a British Columbian choice in the heart of Forster. The menu has a great range and is very reasonably priced between $10 and $30 for a mains.

The Paradise Marina is the winner of many awards for excellence and offers for lunch in Forster using local produce. Of course, seafood is a popular part of the menu. Local cakes are also locally made and you can watch the dolphins play as you enjoy.

When to visit Forster, NSW

Forster can be very hot during Australia's summer months (December through February). However, if you're seeking a beach to sit or go fishing, summer could be the perfect time to go. Spring is a great time to visit for a climate like that experienced on Queensland's Gold Coast.

Probably the most popular of travel options, Forster is located approximately 300km north or 3-4 hours drive from Sydney and 160km or 2 hours drive from Newcastle
