Canberra is the capital city in Australia and has a population of over 300,000 people. Canberra is located at the north of the Australian Capital Territory, which is situated between the south-eastern states of New South Wales and Victoria. Canberra is 280 km south-west of Sydney, and 650 km north-east of Melbourne. It is an inland city.
Canberra's design was influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates areas of natural vegetation. It was a planned city and home of Australia's Parliament House, the High Court of Australia and many other government departments and agencies. Institutions of social and cultural significance, like the National Gallery of Australia and the National Museum of Australia are also located in Canberra.

Sights and Activities
Canberra tours are famous and the city is home to numerous national monuments and institutions. The Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, National Library of Australia, National Archives of Australia, Australian Institute of Sport and the National Museum of Australia are all situated in Canberra.
Parliament House, the High Court and the Royal Australian Mint are all open to the public. Other attractions include fireworks, stunts and the Miss Summernats competition.

When to Go
Canberra weather has four distinct seasons, it experiences hot, dry summers, and cold winters with heavy fog, frequent frosts and sometimes snow. The highest recorded maximum temperature was 42.2 degrees C. The lowest recorded minimum temperature was -10.0 degrees C. Summer begins in December and continues to February. Winter commences in June and continues till the end of August. During the Autumn and Spring seasons it is common to experience the extremes of hot days and then cold nights so take a mix of summer and winter clothing for those seasons.

Air: There are four airlines flying in and out of the Canberra International Airport: Virgin Blue, Tiger Airways, Qantas and Brindabella Airlines all operate on a domestic basis. The airport provides direct domestic services to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Other flights to Newcastle and Albury are also available. No scheduled commercial international flights operate.
Road: Canberra is about three hours drive from Sydney and seven hours drive from Melbourne. As well as driving there are regular coaches by operators including Greyhound Australia.
Rail: By rail, an interstate railway service connects Canberra to Sydney. Train services to Melbourne are provided via a bus service which connects with the Sydney to Melbourne rail line.
